Many working in trade jobs, like plumbers, are always learning. They do this to give you the best service possible and stay current on the latest tools or products. In many ways, that is what we strive to achieve with plumbing our standards support throughout our products. We have been there from day one to ensure every standard is supported, but to make that happen, it takes time, learning and a dedicated team.
This especially goes for the standard LTI. The eLearning standard LTI (aka Learning Tools Interoperability) was designed to create a standardized way to let learning platforms like an LMS or LXP integrate with other tools and share content. More importantly, it was built in a way that helped support the world of educators. It is the de facto standard for platforms and content providers in the education industry from K through 12 to Higher Education and beyond. Although it may be a niche standard for education, it is heavily used by other industries to support continuing education opportunities and more.
When our customers come to us asking for increased support, we take our deep dedication to standards to make sure those pipes are flowing. Let’s take a little dive down the drain into how we are piping support into our products now and in the near future.
Content Controller
Content Controller has a simple mission: you can build your content in a way that makes sense for you, using the tools and technology you prefer, and then share it in any eLearning standard that your current or future customers need. That is why adding support for LTI 1.1 and LTI 1.3 as a tool was a no-brainer so our customers can continue to reach a diverse audience with their content. Many of our customers are either in the education industry or the corporate world and reach vocational schools, industry-specific programs and beyond to train the next generation of their workforce.
Since releasing the original support for Content Controller to share content as an LTI tool, we have iterated on that greatly. Adding more support and features from the standard like the extremely helpful Deep Linking, allowing instructors access to all the content that’s been added to their Content Controller account, right from their LMS. This allows instructors to select whichever courses they prefer and share those courses with their platform automatically.
SCORM Cloud
SCORM Cloud is one of the most unique tools in our product lineup because not only does it support LTI from the tool side but also from the platform side. It has long been an LTI 1.1 certified tool (SCORM Cloud Dispatch) but more recently received certifications to be an LTI 1.3 platform through the SCORM Cloud API. This means that, depending on your business, you could be consuming LTI content from SCORM Cloud as the platform or sending content out as an LTI tool to other platforms.
This versatility makes SCORM Cloud a great tool for those content publishers looking to send their content to LTI platforms or turn your current LMS into one that accepts LTI tools.
Rustici Engine
The OG tool that started it all continues to be the industry standard for support of eLearning standards. That is no different for LTI as it has long been an LTI 1.1 platform but is also a certified LTI 1.3 platform capable of ingesting tool requests and accessing content remotely.
In the near future (think early 2025), we are very excited to bring more LTI 1.3 support to Rustici Engine, including support for Deep Linking as an option for importing content. This will give you and your users easier and more complete access to the content that is being shared with them. More LTI features are being explored for the next release, like more control over optional claims in LTI messages and the ability to send and receive arbitrary messages, so stay tuned for more details.
