If you’d asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I can honestly say it wouldn’t have been “an eLearning standards expert.” And I’m pretty sure no else has either (although if you do, check out our open positions). While many of us at Rustici still wonder when we’ll grow up, we do have our fair share of standards experts.
This month, we were so excited to make the cover of ATD’s TD Magazine with our article “The ABCs of e-Learning Standards.” We always jump at any chance to share our “knowledge of the ancients” – aka what we’ve learned about standards over the decades – and this opportunity was no different. As it turns out, it takes a small village to share the basics of the most common standards while maintaining the pedantic accuracy we’re known and (mostly) loved for.
Tammy the question extraordinaire – Not only does Tammy lead the company, but she is also the lead deep question asker. It’s one of her superpowers, and that inquisitive nature always leads to higher quality and more in-depth content.
Joe the SCORM whisperer – With 17 years of experience working with SCORM and even predating SCORM Cloud, we rely on his ancient wisdom. Joe also predates all Rusticians, putting him at the top of the “Our People” and earning him his own stickers.
Brian the profiler – Brian also admits that he didn’t think he’d grow up to be a standards expert either, but when you need help figuring out xAPI or cmi5 statements, he’s your guy. He’s on the cmi5 working group board and looks for ways to help shape where the standards go next.
Alicia the wrangler – Our standards village has decades of experience, and I help wrangle all that info into a memorable story along with adding in my cmi5 expertise. I haven’t earned my own sticker yet, but my cat Four has, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
And the learning standards themselves might look very different without Rusticians Ben SCORM the OG SCORM wizard, Tin Can Andy the original xAPI hype machine and Chris’s dedication to educating and promoting standards far and wide. While these three don’t have their own stickers either, on someone’s 10th anniversary at Rustici they receive their very own Tin Can man! And Chris has has been the star on side of a giveaway fan – sharing the fame with Joe.

A big thank you to TD Magazine for inviting us to write a cover story! If you’ll be at ATD ICE this year, be sure to come by and meet Joe and the team at booth #610. And check out Chris and Joe’s speaking session “SCORM’s Not Dead, But You Have eLearning Standards Options” Tuesday, May 20th from 4-5pm EDT in Room 151B.
As always, if you have any questions about eLearning standards and connecting learning technologies, ask us anything! We have an entire village waiting to help.
