Introduction
Vimeo is a leading professional video hosting service on a mission to simplify what it takes to make, manage and share video. Vimeo has grown from a place to show off work to a platform to create, edit and share videos by creatives and enterprise organizations alike.
As Vimeo has increased its platform and industry footprint to over 250 million users, its focus expanded to serving enterprise customers. A recurring need emerged: Integrating video content with Learning Management Systems (LMSs) to track user progress, completions and quiz scores. This required a robust, supported solution that could scale with the high-quality, long-form content Vimeo is known for. Its tools were evolving, but its goal of helping people create and share stunning videos was still a top priority.
The challenge
Before partnering with Rustici Software, Vimeo was limited in how it could support its enterprise customers’ Learning and Development (L&D) requirements. Simple iFrame embedding was possible for video display, but it failed to provide the proactive data sharing necessary for an LMS to track learner progress and compliance—a critical requirement for large corporations, hospitals, government entities and high compliance industries alike. External, unsupported solutions exist, but they lack the technical reliability and contractual support required by larger enterprise clients. Furthermore, existing SCORM-based solutions in the market often forced customers to compromise on video quality and length due to restrictive LMS storage limits, preventing them from uploading long-form, high-quality videos.
Vimeo needed a solution that would allow its customers to use professional, high-quality longform training videos without sacrificing the ability to capture and track essential learning data in an LMS or worry about storage limits.
“In sales and marketing, it's important to understand why customers say 'yes' or 'no' to your product. We were getting a lot of opportunities for eLearning and video training, but we struggled to win. During interviews those customers pointed at our lack of LMS integration as the deciding factor. As a result, I became the LMS champion at Vimeo, driven to unlock this capability for our customers.”
The solution
Vimeo chose to implement Rustici Cross Domain (RXD) to provide a stable SCORM integration to meet the requirements of its emerging L&D markets. RXD creates a proxy file of a Vimeo video, or any non-standards based training content, that is then uploaded into an LMS. From the LMS perspective, the file acts the same as a SCORM, cmi5 or xAPI course would. When the learner launches the course, they’re directed back to Vimeo servers. This allows the video itself to be hosted and streamed securely from Vimeo’s robust infrastructure while still reporting key learning data back to any LMS. Once a learner exits the course, RXD sends key data to the LMS, like completion, score, time and pass/fail.
By implementing Rustici Cross Domain, Vimeo expedited its entry into the L&D space as a platform that can easily fit into modern eLearning ecosystems.
The benefits
Dynamic SCORM functionality creates a competitive advantage
One of the key features of Vimeo’s newest SCORM enterprise offering is its dynamism, providing interactive elements and the ability to replace or update the video while maintaining the same link in the LMS. In addition, the solution ensures content remains protected by security measures, like SSO and ISO 27701, which are crucial in some sectors.
Exponential growth in revenue and pipeline
The L&D use case has become one of Vimeo’s fastest growing markets and is expected to only increase in the future. Deals that include the eLearning integration are generating much higher average contract values and providing a significant benefit to Vimeo’s customers.
Uncompromised video quality and content length in a small package size
The lightweight nature of the RxD-powered SCORM package (which calls the video via API) solves the common problem of LMS storage limits, allowing customers to use high-quality videos of any size for training and compliance content. This capability ensures customers can deliver professional-quality training without extra storage costs.
Fast, reliable LMS integration
Vimeo’s RxD integration was up and running in two months after using Rustici’s industry knowledge to quickly prioritize and implement SCORM 1.2. This avoided the trial and error of supporting various standards simultaneously to start. In Vimeo’s first few months, it had a smooth product roll out without technical concerns and was able to focus entirely on expanding the platform and go to market functions.
Adding a quizzing functionality to their offering
Vimeo’s quizzing functionality, allows users to add evaluations, knowledge checks and quizzes on top of videos. This has effectively positioned Vimeo as a video course authoring tool offering three scoring methods for SCORM packages: Tracking completion based on percentage of video watched, pass/fail based on completion threshold and setting a passing quiz score.
“Vimeo prides itself on providing capabilities that just work, RXD made that possible. Our customers love it! Dynamic SCORM video courses pair well with our other strengths in video marketing and internal comms. Customers are consolidating video platforms from separate vendors for each use case to using Vimeo for all their video needs without compromise.”
The results
Vimeo successfully moved from being a content creation and marketing tool to an all-encompassing video platform that addresses a core need for L&D, training and compliance across its customer base. With the implementation with Rustici Cross Domain, Vimeo has seen numerous results, including:
- The added SCORM support has positioned Vimeo as a video course authoring tool.
- The L&D use case has become Vimeo’s second most common (after marketing) and is expected to be a major revenue driver for 2026. eLearning integration deals are increasing contract values exponentially and opening up millions in the revenue pipeline.
- The integration and new business helped achieve the CEO’s “10x challenge” for growth.
- In the first few months, Vimeo has seen more potential enterprise opportunities with over 30 strategic-level global customers (10,000+ employees).
- The implementation was completed in approximately two months with no technical misalignment issues across various customer LMS environments.
“We’re seeing about 10 times larger overall contract value from a typical enterprise deal to when they add the LMS integration. We can position ourselves as more of a platform than a one-point solution.”
