LKQ Corporation is a leading international automotive recycler that provides quality alternatives for the automotive replacement parts marketplace. They offer a variety of replacement discount auto parts, including remanufactured engines and transmissions, components, aftermarket parts and paint and paint-related products. LKQ locations span the globe, with more than 46,000 employees in over 25 countries.

The challenge

Being a global leader, LKQ faced challenges in managing and distributing training across its vast international workforce. In addition, they needed to support 26 different languages and struggled with content localization, version control and consistent reporting in their previous Learning Management System (LMS).

LKQ’s content management process was complex and time-consuming. The LKQ team had to manage multiple course versions to account for the different languages, which caused:

  • Inefficient content maintenance and updating: In their previous LMS, it was a 50+-step manual process to update and replace a single course, which could take as long as 24-48 hours to complete and cause downtime for users.
  • Inconsistent end-user experience: LKQ uses QR codes to connect frontline workers with training. When a course was updated, the URL would change, leading to confusion and additional steps for learners.
  • Lack of standardization: They didn’t have a way to consistently roll out training globally to their multinational learner population.
  • Reporting issues: Difficulty in tracking course completion due to localized titles and the need to link numerous equivalent courses in different languages for accurate data.

The solution

LKQ wanted a transformative solution that would enable them to standardize learning content, achieve substantial operational efficiencies and pave the way for a global competency framework. By implementing Content Controller, LKQ was able to centralize content management, simplify language management with equivalencies, more efficiently update and version content, standardize training delivery globally and better track their compliance training.

Content Controller has allowed us to actually fully automate a lot of processes, especially on the North America side of the house. It takes a lot of the heavy lifting off of the admin.

The benefits

Simplifying language and content management
Content Controller allows LKQ to import proxy files into their LMS, enabling a single course title for administration, regardless of the number of languages available. The learner links are now permanent, so employees know they’re always accessing the latest content, which improved trust and allowed LKQ to scale programs consistently.

Saving a significant amount of time versioning courses
Previously, LKQ had a manual 58-step process for updating each course in every language offered that could take up to two days to complete. Now they have a four-step process to replace and update a course almost instantaneously with no downtime for employees.

Reporting compliance training made easy
Content Controller enabled LKQ to establish better reporting standards, providing accurate and reliable data for legal and safety compliance. This eliminated the historical reporting confusion of having courses in multiple languages and allowed for clear, fact-based insights into training completion rates.

Debugging when there are course concerns
Content Controller’s debug feature makes it easy to identify and resolve issues with third-party content. They’re able to show and prove what isn’t working and then troubleshoot solutions faster.

Seamlessly migrated LMSs
When LKQ was ready to transition to a new LMS, they were able to easily make the move with Content Controller being the source of truth for their course library. Not only was the migration simple, they were able to keep historical learner data since it was stored in Content Controller.

Content Controller provides stability for end-users and simplifies problem diagnosis through its reporting system and debug feature.

The results

Since implementing Content Controller, LKQ has seen tangible results:

  • Saving the cost of two employees yearly salaries: Streamlining course versioning significantly reduced the time spent on routine tasks and enabled them to focus on program improvements.
  • Increased number of learners by 30,000: With Content Controller, they were able to easily scale their program as their learner count went from 16,000 to 46,000 (20% office workers, 80% front line workers).
  • 90% reduction in support tickets: Permanently stabilizing the URLs and QR codes reduced monthly service ticket volume from 600 to 60.
  • Improved course satisfaction: Learner satisfaction increased from 3.5 stars to 4.5 stars.
  • Better reporting standards: They are now easily able to pull factual reports on compliance training.
  • Increasing resource availability: Freed up time and resources to focus on strategic platform development and learner advancement.
  • Reaching automated onboarding goals: Paved the way for LKQ to be able to fully automate a significant portion of onboarding processes in North America.
  • Smoothly migrated LMSs: Facilitated an easy switch between LMS systems in 2023 since all root files were centralized in Content Controller, which saved time and cost.
  • Reduced the number of systems: From six systems down to one.

With Content Controller, we’ve seen better reporting standards. I think that’s been magic for us. It’s covered up a lot of the noise. Before, we’d present data and hear completion discrepancies. That’s all gone away. The data is all standardized, and we have a more accurate and reliable number.
